What is the “hope passengers” book?
-“hope passengers” is a refugee novel written by Demirhan Atilla that explains the reason and results of immigration with a painful story.
the book begins with two drivers -who names Ceyhun and Ayhan- drive a truck on Iraq ways. The truck goes to a food depot. there is a group of an immigrant here. the intention of this depot is camouflage.
the immigrants have come from different countries owing to the war, hunger, poverty, and save their lives. They want to go West countries. Because of this, they have paid a high amount of money to these ‘people smugglers’.
Ceyhun and Ayhan (drivers) put refugees back part of the truck. There are sugar sacks on every side in the back part of the truck. and an iron cage middle of the sacks. the refugees are put here. a refugee refuses this dangerous journey. and he remains here. other immigrants and drivers set off toward Turkey.
“turning back means war, poverty, unemployment for migrants. as for (ise, e gelince) the journey is the ambiguity (belirsizlik) including hope for them. Because migrants have sold out everything before came here. If they back turn, they have neither a home nor a job to live on.”
the truck that carries migrants passes from the Turkey border. While the truck is moving on Turkey ways, Kenyan Thomas dies due to lack of air and very bad conditions. There are many children inside. They see the lifeless body of Thomas. Children cry. their parents also have affected. they try to shout at drivers. but they can not achieve. for hours and hours, migrants and their dead friend Thomas stayed at the same place.
Around Konya Ereğli’s mountains, they stop for a rest. Ceyhun and Ayhan open the back part of the truck. they are unaware of events. They take out migrants one by one. and they see dead Thomas. Nikolas -the friend of Thomas- begins to beat driver Ceyhun. he is so angry. Another driver Ayhan fears him and runs off through the forest and covers his tracks (izini kaybettirir).
Eventually (sonunda), other migrants rescue Ceyhun from Nikolas. They calm Nikolas. and migrants bury their friend Thomas. And they continue their journey at the back part of the truck.
Migrants part two groups further on. First group will pass Lesbos (Midilli Adası) through Ayvalık. The second group will pass Greece through Meriç River.
Migrants who want to pass over Meriç River, drown as a result of opening dam cover by Bulgaria. Just Salih and Yusuf are saved from drowning. They are regretful to take hope journey. Yusuf shout to Meriç river:
“I lost my everything; my wife, my children… my hope, my future… all of them perish in Meriç Stream. I became an illegal migrant, I lost. Whatever will happen, don’t set off as depending illegal migrant gangs….”
Salih and Yusuf have passed Greece. But they are killed among the wheat fields by racist migrant enemies. But their murderer has killed soon by other groups.
Migrants who want to pass over Ayvalık to Lesbos have been sacrificed to a dark plan. PRS spies sink their boats. So, what are PRS spies?
According to the novel, PRS and KLM spies is a secret organization founded by six European presidents. PRS is in charge of sinking migrant boats in the Aegean Sea and KLM in the Western Mediterranean. According to the plan, refugee boats will constantly sink. Drowning images of hundred of migrants will serve to press and so immigrants who intend to come will afraid.
Here it is; they do the first massacre on migrants' boats.
In the morning, all coasts are full of immigrant corpses. Immigrants who rescue are just Nicolas and three other migrants and two children saved by them. The child at the name of “Barış” dies -that trying rescue by Nikolas-
Nikolas and his friends arrive at first Lesbos and next Greece. The entire world’s press talks dead babies and people hitting ashore. But nobody talks about who did this. Nobody talks about reasons, results, and solutions ways of immigration. But persons that doing this massacre, share poignant, dramatic messages.
According to the author, this plan of PRS can not reach desiring result. Thousands of migrants can not be stopped.
The writer enters deep analysis while telling the story. For him, the reason for all migration problems are; exploitation of the poor section by rich section of the world. And author presents all humanity a solution:
‘production together and sharing equal’.
Production together and sharing equal will get peace. and no need weapon factory. The author proposes (önermek) carrying weapon factories to poor countries as turning tractors, car and white good factories. In this way, poor countries develop rapidly.
So, the author says, migration can solve only by removing the reasons for migration.
Hope Passengers novel deserves to enter among “world’s classics”. Because it testifies to our dark age. And I think it is the first book that tells immigration with its’ reasons, results, and definite solution. This book contains many other historical events such as the execution of Saddam Hussein, the assault Twin Towers, the Iraq war, the Kenya civil war, so and so.
